The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams were in action this past weekend on the road in British Columbia for a pair of Canada West regular season games against the University of Fraser Valley Cascades and the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack.
The grueling road trip began on Friday night in Abbotsford against the Cascades. The Women’s team started their portion of the road trip on the right foot with a solid 64-41 victory. It was a total team effort on this night with fifth year guard Randie Gibson leading the way with a game high 14 points. Fourth year post Alex MacIver added 13 points and six rebounds and fourth year guard Catie Gooch added 11.
On the men’s side, the Wesmen played tough in a close 77-68 loss to the Cascades. Fourth year guard Nick Lother led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points. Mike James, in his fourth season and second year forward Eric Zimmerman each scored 16 points.
Immediately following the game, the teams boarded a bus in preparation for a four hour bus trip to Kamloops to face the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack on Saturday night. Upon arrival in Kamloops at 3:00 a.m. the teams immediately checked into their hotel and got some much needed sleep in preparation for the game later that evening against the Wolfpack.
In the women’s game the Wolfpack dashed the hopes of a Wesmen road trip sweep with a 79-67 victory. Third year guard Amy Ogidan led the team with a double-double 16 points and 13 rebounds. Gooch finished with 14. Alex MacIver and Randie Gibson added 11 points. The weekend split leaves the Wesmen with a record of 6-5 in the tight Prarie Division standings.
Later that evening, the men’s team were defeated 94-60 by the Wolfpack. Nick Lother led the team 18 points and four steals. Peter Lomuro finished with 14 points and six rebounds. The two losses leave the Wesmen with a regular season record of 0-11.
For their efforts in the two games Nick Lother and Randie Gibson were selected as the Winnipeg Wesmen Male and Female Players of the Week.
