Rossy, 5'11 left side player from Westwood Collegiate is a first year Arts student at the University of Winnipeg.  Sonia was a starter for all 20 regular season matches for the Wesmen this past season.  She compiled 176 kills, 293 defensive digs and 28 blocks during the season.  Rossy, placed third in the Canada West Conference in digs with 3.71 digs per game.  She finished the regular season with 10+ kills in eight matches and 10+ defensive digs in 14 matches.  Rossy recorded a season high 20 kills at Simon Fraser on January 29, 2010 (5th most in Canada West Conference) and had a season high 30 digs vs Trinity Western on January 22, 2010 (2nd most in Canada West Conference).  She was named the University of Winnipeg's Female Athlete of the Month for November, 2009 and the Female Player of the Week for the week of November 2-8, 2009).  She becomes the second Wesmen to receive the honour of Canada West Rookie of the Year.  Marlee Bragg was the first to receive that honour in 2005-2006.

“It has been an exciting and surprising freshman season for Sonia, definitely more then we anticipated.  Less then a year ago Sonia had a serious shoulder injury that did not allow her to swing in training,” said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott, adding, “As a first-year athlete she had some tough lessons along the way, but the most impressive thing is that she is a complete competitor 100%.  She does not lack in the energy and fight department and as a first-year lead our team impressively on many nights”.

Ariel Smith Named Canada West Second Team All-Star

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen and the Canada West Universities Athletic Association are pleased to announce that women's volleyball player Ariel Smith has been named to the Canada West Women's Volleyball Second All-Star Team.

Smith, 5’9” ls/rs recently completed her second season with the upstart Women’s Volleyball Team.  She led the team in kills (218), placed second in points (238) and third in defensive digs (261).  Smith placed 7th in the Canada West Conference in defensive digs with 3.29 digs per game.  She recorded a season high 18 kills on two occasions (Jan 16 at Saskatchewan and Jan 22 vs Trinity Western) and a season high 25 defensive digs against the Regina Cougars on February 6, 2010.  Smith was named the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Challenge Female Player of the Game in October and was named the University of Winnipeg’s Female Athlete of the Month for January, 2010.  As well Ariel was the Female Player of the Week on three occasions.

“As a second year veteran on a very young team she once again showed her maturity and drive to become better everyday in the gym!  Her consistency as a primary passer along with her natural defensive read makes her a key component in our team's stability!  At the net she continues to excel and is improving all the time! Definitely a leader on and off the court, Ariel has the ability to put the team on her shoulders to get the job done", added Head Coach Diane Scott.
